The Chief Medical Officer of the Trust Hospital in Accra, Dr Joseph Nelson, has noted that people living with diabetes could live a full and healthy life through proper dieting and discipline.

He has therefore called on people living with the disease to seek the right medical care and attention through regular medical check-ups.

Dr Nelson said this during a lecture at the Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (AFSTS) at Burma Camp in Accra.

On the symptoms of diabetes, Dr Nelson advised people to seek immediate medical check-up when they saw symptoms such as increased thirst, weight loss, frequent passage of urine and unnecessary tiredness.

He urged parents to inform school authorities about the health conditions of their children with special needs and advised teachers to be helpful, supportive, observant and calm with students with diabetes.

The lecture was organised by the Kafui Foundation for Childhood Diabetes (KFCD), a non-profit foundation in memory of the late Miss Kafui Ama Agbenuzah, who lived with Type 1 diabetes for 15 years.

The mission of the foundation is to help needy children in Ghana living with Type 1 diabetes to effectively manage their condition to enable them live long.

The foundation undertakes diabetes-screening programmes, visits to hospitals and clinics, donations to individuals living with the disease and several outreach programmes.
