Fresh clashes erupt at Agbogbloshie

Fresh disturbances erupted Wednesday morning at Agbogbloshie, hours after calm was restored following violent clashes between the Dagomba and Konkomba ethnic groups on Tuesday.

Wednesday's disturbances occurred after a meeting between the two ethnic groups at the Yam Market. Mr Kwame Noah, chairman of the community addressed the meeting. 

According to Graphic Online's Kweku Zurek, a scuffle occurred shortly after the meeting and degenerated when the armed security personnel deployed to the place attempted to disperse the crowd after Noah had addressed them. 

The military in the process of dispersing a crowd who had gathered to listen to Noah after the meeting arrested a man who was wielding a pocket knife, bringing to three the total number of person's arrested on the day.

The manner in which some of the military men handled the person they arrested angered the crowd, who attempted to rush on the military checkpoint (barricade).

Prior to the disturbances, residents were going about their regular business under the supervision of a heavy police and military presence.

Chief Inspector Kwesi Fori, the commanding officer of the police on the scene told the Graphic Online that calm has been restored after several checkpoints were mounted throughout the community. 

Two persons were arrested on Tuesday dawn for possessing locally manufactured guns before the scuffle between residents and the military.

 

Background

Two persons were killed after a bloody confrontation between the Dagomba and Konkomba ethnic groups at Agbogbloshie on Tuesday in Accra .

Scores of people also sustained various degrees of injury in the confrontation which was characterised by gunshots and the brandishing of machetes.

Later, temporary calm was restored to the area before Wednesday's disturbances.
