Court sentences sawmiller to 10 years’ imprisonment for robbery

A 22-year-old sawmiller who snatched a tricycle from its owner at knifepoint at Zanjirigu, a farming community along the Tamale-Salaga road has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for robbery by a Tamale Circuit Court.

Salim Alhassan, who pleaded guilty for robbery, was sentenced by the court, presided over by Mr. Justice William Twumasi Appiah.

Facts

The facts of the case as presented in court were that, Alhassan and his accomplice hired the tricycle in Tamale to convey some goods to Salaga in the East Gonja District.

When they got to a secluded area on the way, Alhassan and his acomplice pulled out a knife and a screw driver and managed to dispossess the rider of the tricycle and sped off.

The victim, who was stranded, later met a motor rider and narrated the incident to him. They subsequently alerted some residents in the next community who pursued them. The convict Alhassan and his accomplice later abandoned the tricycle and jumped into a nearby river.

The people surrounded the river thus compelling Alhassan to come out. He was eventually arrested and handed over to the police. His accomplice is however believed to have drowned in the river.
