The policeman has been identified as Emmanuel David Sandoh, with service number 53389 and attached to the National Visibility Unit of the Ghana Police Service at the Accra Regional Police Command.

The two accomplices, who are yet to be identified, escaped arrest and the police have mounted a manhunt for them.

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said Sandoh was arrested about 12 midnight yesterday when he attempted to snatch a car from its owner at the Nkrumah Flat within the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital enclave.

Cry for help

Sandoh, who was wielding a pistol, is said to have demanded the ignition keys from the driver of a red Hyundai Matiz which the owner was using for Uber services, a popular door-to-door transportation system.

When the driver failed to hand over the keys, Sandoh, who had pepper spray on him, allegedly sprayed pepper into the driver’s eyes.

The driver, whose identity has been withheld by the police to protect him, raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of some residents of the area.

Sensing danger, Sandoh’s two accomplices took to their heels when the residents went to the victim’s aid, but luck eluded Sandoh.

Sandoh was apprehended by the residents and beaten mercilessly until he was rescued by a police patrol team which arrived on the scene.

He is currently on admission at the Police Hospital where he is being treated for injuries.
