CHAG bemoans delays in reimbursement by NHIA

The  Executive Director of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), Mr Peter K. Yeboah, has bemoaned the inability of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to reimburse CHAG facilities on time, saying the situation is seriously affecting effective health delivery at health centres.

According to him, since December 2015 the NHIA has not reimbursed most of CHAG facilities for their services.

“This chronic indebtedness of the NHIA to CHAG is eroding confidence in the health system, perpetuating social injustice and widening avoidable health inequalities,’’ he indicated.

He, therefore, appealed to the government to prioritise the payment of the outstanding debts as a matter of urgency, as they collectively explored feasible mechanisms to restructure the NHIS into a sustainable, efficient, equitable and accountable scheme.

Anniversary

Mr Yeboah was speaking at the 70th anniversary of the Agomanya St Martin’s de Porres Catholic Hospital in the Lower Manya Krobo municipality in the Eastern Region.

It was established by Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, an SVD, in 1946 as a clinic and later turned into a hospital to serve the people of Krobo and nearby communities.

The  anniversary was on the theme: “70 years of providing quality health care: Challenges, prospects and the way forward’’.

Mr Yeboah congratulated the management and staff of the hospital on their hard work and commitment which he said had made the facility one of the best in the country.

Appeal

The Bishop of the Koforidua Diocese of the Catholic Church, the Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, emphasised the need for the government to decouple the role of a regulator from that of a client in the services of the NHIA.

He urged the management of the NHIA to eliminate fraud at all levels of its operations and to pay realistic tariffs to service providers.

The Bishop expressed appreciation to the workers of the hospital for their sacrifices and dedication over the years.

Tribute

The Hospital Administrator, Mr Osei Owusu Bempah, paid growing tribute to the founder, Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, and his able Catholic Sisters, who assisted in the establishment of the hospital.

He appealed for the provision of accommodation for staff and the expansion of facilities at the hospital.

Ghana Aids Commission

The Eastern Regional Technical Coordinator for the Ghana Aids Commission, Ms Golda Asante, said the area had made significant progress in HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services through the services of the hospital.

Some deserving workers and retirees were presented with citations, fridges and cash for their meritorious services.
