The suspects  have been identified as Michael Lante, alias Accra Boy,19, and Derrick Asaase, alias Blood Money, 22.

The two, however, sustained bruises on their heads and other parts of their body from the beatings by the mob.

They are currently in the custody of the Odorkor Police after they were treated and discharged from the Accra Police Hospital.

Distress call

Confirming the story to the Daily Graphic, the Odorkor District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Abraham Acquaye, said the police received distress calls from some eyewitnesses at about 11:20p.m. last Sunday and a team of police personnel was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Police investigations, he said, established that the two suspects had gone clubbing at Osu and hired the services of a taxi driver to transport them to Odorkor Tipper area.

On reaching a spot called Osei Kwame, near Odorkor in Accra, Lante is said to have ordered the driver to park his Nissan Amera taxi, with registration number GL 164-13, and surrender the car keys.

Taxi driver stabbed

Mr Acquaye said the driver whose name was being withheld by the police for security reasons , refused to surrender the keys.

Lante allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed  the driver on the right hand.

According to the commander, "the driver started shouting for help which attracted some passers-by leading to the arrest of the two. They were mercilessly beaten and nearly lynched before a police patrol team arrived at the scene to save them."

Mr Acquaye said while in custody, two other victims came to identify the two suspects as the persons who had robbed them some time ago.
