Be courteous when dealing with public - Police advised

The Eastern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr George Alex Mensah, has asked personnel of the service to be courteous when dealing with members of the public.

He said it was the duty of the police to protect the public and their property and ensure that peace and tranquility prevailed at all times.

He was speaking at the maiden Regional Police Commander’s Parade held in his honour by the Eastern Regional Police Command in Koforidua last Wednesday.

“If we continue to molest the public as police officers, then we are failing in our responsibility to be friendly. It means that we would be collecting our salaries for no reason, yet it is incumbent on us to work diligently for the service and the country,” ACP Mensah said.

Rule of law

He promised to ensure that police officers in the region operated within the confines of the law.

“The days are gone when officers misbehaved and they were not brought to book. The service is operating under a democratic policy where the rule of law will be ensured. Any officer who flouts the law will be dealt with accordingly,” he cautioned.

He called on the personnel to change their attitude as far as their work was concerned.

ACP Mensah pointed out that discipline and time consciousness were prerequisites in the discharge of police duties and said officers found wanting were not ready to serve in the service.

“We live in a region where there is rampant chieftaincy disputes. Each of us must be willing and ready to be assigned at any time when issues arise,” he said.

Caution

The regional commander warned against the misuse of police vehicles.

He also warned personnel who “drink while on duty to desist from the practice”.

“Since we wield guns, I entreat all of us to desist from drinking alcohol to prevent the misuse of the weapons,” he added.
