AUCC organises health screening for students, residents

The African University College of Communications (AUCC) and a health-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Reproductive Cancer Awareness Team (ReProCan), have organised health screening for students of the school and residents of Adabraka where the school is located.

They were screened for Hepatitis B, blood pressure, body sugar level, body mass index, breast cancer and malaria.

Some were also tested for HIV, while a counseling session was set up to advise participants with serious conditions.

Participants, who were diagnosed with diseases, were given medication, while those with serious conditions were referred to hospital for expert attention.

Some of the participants donated blood to support the Korle Bu Blood Bank.

A medical team comprising physician assistants and nurses from ReProCan performed the screening, with assistance from bodies such as the Ghana Aids Commission, the Ridge Hospital and Kinapharma Ltd.

Welfare

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Welfare Officer of the university’s Students Representative Council (SRC), Mrs Gladys Attah-Boateng, advised the public to visit health centres regularly or at least every six months to check their health status.

She bemoaned the Ghanaian attitude of blaming their woes on occultism and poverty and not visiting the hospital to check on their health until they were seriously sick.

Breast cancer

On breast cancer, Mrs Attah-Boateng encouraged women to self-examine their breasts, as well as visit hospitals for breast examination so that the effects of morbidity and mortality arising from the disease could be reduced.

The Programmes Coordinator of the SRC, Ms Mabel Delassie Awuku, urged Ghanaian businesses to support health screening activities with sponsorhip for the less privileged.

According to her, many people were under the impression that health screening exercises were for the rich and stressed the importance for everyone to have their health status checked periodically.

She commended the Kinapharma for supporting the medical outreach programme.
