The Very Reverend (Mrs) Agnes Atta-Amofa said the world was drifting to a point where only educated people cloud make meaning of the happenings around them and so parents and guardians had to educate the children under their care, otherwise “they would be left behind in everything in their adult life”.

The superintendent minister in charge of the Nyankomase-Ahenkro Circuit of the Methodist Church of Ghana made the appeal at Assin Odumase recently at the maiden open day of the Assin Odumase District Assembly Basic School where she  was the special guest.

The event was held on the theme: “The Role of Stakeholders in Child Education”.

The open day was also meant to give opportunity to parents, guardians and other stakeholders to have an idea of the activities carried out in the school and to inspect exercises done by the children in the various subjects taught in the school.

It was also meant to raise some funds to buy furniture, learning aids and some books which would be given out as prizes to deserving pupils.

Very Rev. Atta-Amofa charged parents not to “sacrifice children’s education on the altar of sophisticated home appliances, luxurious dressing and very expensive, high-class funerals”.

The Head Teacher of the school, Mr Kwabena Anokye, commended the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Professor Dominic Fobih, for spearheading the construction of the school’s current infrastructure.

Conducive environment

He explained that the new blocks for the KG, primary and junior high sections had provided a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Mr Anokye said performance had been enhanced such that the junior high school pupils who sat for the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) obtained 95 per cent passes.

The school also emerged first in the inter-circuit quiz competition held in the Assin South District recently.

An Assistant Director of Education at the Assin South Education Office, Mr Alex Agyei, implored parents to monitor their daughters as a way of helping to check teenage pregnancy which was a huge problem in the district.

Speaking on behalf of the District Director of Education, he said the Ghana Education Service would give incentives to other hardworking teachers, apart from those who would win awards under the Best Teacher Award Scheme.
