While inaugurating a three-unit classroom block with facilities for the Buobai M.A Basic School which was formerly operating under trees, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Alhaji Nurudeen Hamidan, said the assembly was bent on improving on educational standards in the area.

Classroom blocks

He said apart from roads which had received greater attention in the municipality, the building of classroom blocks to end the era of schools under trees was also on course.

He noted that the government had also increased enrolment with the school-feeding programme from 9,000 to 11,800 beneficiaries, adding that the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) had also been extended from 677 households to 2,889 households.

The MP for Asawase, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, mentioned that the ruling government deserved better for what it had done for the people in the area and, therefore, asked residents of the Asawase Constituency to show gratitude by voting for President John Dramani Mahama and also for him to continue as the MP for the area.

Hardworking teachers

The MP concurred with the MCE on his call to award hardworking teachers in the area, saying now that no school remained under trees, it was pertinent to institute an award scheme for all hardworking teachers.

Apart from that, he charged the education directorate to intensify its supervisory role so as to check on teachers to give of their maximum best to reflect in yearly performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results of schools.

He also mentioned that his office would work closely with the directorate to punish absenting and all under-performing teachers whose actions were likely to affect the pupils negatively.

Religious tolerance

Alhaji Muntaka said the world was moving to the level where religious tolerance was fast growing and there was no need for the health directorate in the municipality to deprive some Muslims of their religious liberty and prevent them from wearing the veil while on duty.

The head teacher of the school, Madam Elizabeth Addai Poku, expressed gratitude to the assembly for the new classroom block, describing the initiative as very positive.
