She said their initiative would complement the government’s effort at addressing the needs of inmates and enhance the operations of the prison officers.

The project was initiated and funded by the Ashanti regional branch of the association with support from other sources, at an estimated cost of GH¢22,000.

Speaking at the inauguration of the project, Madam Baffour-Awuah called on other institutions, NGOs and philanthropists to emulate the gesture of PRILAS, since it would help generate income to promote the activities of its members, support inmates and their children and also create an avenue for the female inmates who would be operating the facility to learn a trade that would help in their reformation after they had served their jail term.

Reformation of inmates

The Ashanti Regional President of PRILAS, Assistant Commissioner of Prisons, Madam Juana Fofo Tachie-Otoo, in her welcome address, said the reformation of inmates needed a multi-sectorial approach and called on all to support in that direction.

Since the inauguration of PRILAS Ashanti, it has been organising programmes, such as health talks, clean-up campaigns and recreational programmes to enhance the welfare of its members.

She stated that female inmates who would be working at the mill would be given a stipend to motivate them to learn the trade so that it would empower them economically.

Madam Tachie-Otoo pledged PRILAS’s support towards the proper upkeep of its members as well as inmates, especially the female ones.

Two years ago, PRILAS donated assorted food items worth GH¢300 to the inmates of the Amanfrom Prison Camp and in July this year, assorted items worth GH¢600 were again donated to them for their upkeep.

As part of activities marking Ghana’s Republic Day, the Ashanti regional branch of PRILAS presented food items worth GH¢600 to inmates of the Manhyia Prisons. The items included sugar, oranges, pineapples, water melons, bananas, sachet water, bread and toiletries.
