Asene, Manso undergo health screening

Men’s Health Foundation, Ghana, a prostate cancer advocate group based in Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, has organised a screening exercise on prostate health for more than 400 men at Akyem Asene and Akyem Manso in the Eastern Region.

The Birim Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Kwabena Bempong, and the chiefs of Asene sponsored the Asene screening while an Oda-based businessman, Mr Baah Sakyi, single-handedly financed the Manso programme.

Addressing participants, the Director of the foundation, Dr Raphael Nyarkotey-Obu, advised males to undergo regular screening and treatment at health facilities since prostate cancer was the number one killer of men, especially the black race.

He stated that during the screening, it came to light that most of the men had problems with their prostates.

Dr Nyarkotey-Obu called on the government to declare Fathers’ Day and September each year as prostrate health awareness day and month respectively as that would encourage men to take charge of their health because unlike women, men were not proactive of their health.

“The setting aside of such periods by the government for such screening and treatment exercise will enable men to know the seriousness of the disease as the whole man depends on the prostate because it is the power house of every man,” he added.

Dr Nyarkotey-Obu stressed that if policy makers and men knew the importance of the prostate gland, they would not ignore it but would join the fight.

The director, therefore, urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to implement its special cancer policy promised in the party’s 2016 manifesto on its health page.

He stressed that his outfit had already presented a report to the Presidency to declare Father’s Day and September each year as prostate cancer awareness day and month.

The participants at Manso signed a petition to be presented to the Minister of Gender and Social Protection to include cancer patients on the Livelihood Empowerment Project (LEAP).
