Anyanui, Fuveme Premix Committee initiates projects

The Anyanui, Fuveme Premix Committee in the Keta municipality  in the Volta Region is using its community’s share of premix fuel profit to construct four bungalows for nurses posted to the area.

The one-bedroom houses sited behind the Anyanui Clinic are expected to help solve the accommodation challenges that face nurses and midwives posted to the three communities.

The committee, however, appealed to the National Premix Fuel Committee to ensure constant supply of fuel to the area to help speed up the project.

“We realise that the nurses suffer while trying to get accommodation when they are posted. This is our little contribution to dealing with the situation,” Mr Pillow Defor, the chairman of the Anyanui, Fuveme Premix Committee, told the Daily Graphic.

Premix fuel is a subsidised petroleum product used by fishermen in the marine and inland sectors to power outboard motors in boats and canoes during fishing.

The original idea was to ensure the timely availability of the product to fishermen at an affordable price and to empower the fisher groups to run premix fuel sale points at the landing beaches.

According to the committee’s figures, it served 84 communities in the Keta municipality, South Tongu and Dangme West districts but members of the committee said the inconsistent supply was affecting fishermen and the progress of their projects.

In the Keta municipality alone, more than 500 fishermen use outboard motors.

“We want to leave a lasting legacy that people will always refer to when they are talking about premix committees. The funds are not for our pockets, they are meant to help develop our communities,” Mr Defor added.

Mr Defor, therefore, appealed to the National Premix Committee to put the area on the priority list to ensure a constant supply to help the local committee to achieve its objectives.

Renovations

Apart from the nurses bungalow project, the committee is also financing the renovation of three-classroom blocks and a computer laboratory at Fuveme and Atiteti.

At Fuveme, the junior high school block of the Fuveme Basic School was renovated after it started developing cracks.

Two other classroom blocks and a computer laboratory at Atiteti Basic School were also renovated to save them from deterioration.

“We see education as very important for the development of our community that is why we invested in these facilities,” he added.

He said the three facilities had so far cost the committee GH¢45,000.

Challenges dealt with

When contacted, the Board Chairman of the National Premix Board, Mr Kwaku Sersah-Johnson, said the obstacles that impeded the constant supply of the fuel had been cleared.

He urged the various committees to use at least 53 per cent of their profit to help develop their communities.
