The suspect, Enoch Osafo Amankwah, who responds to aliases such as ‘School Boy’ and ‘Abudu Basit’, has been on the police wanted list since 2012 after he had allegedly attacked a banker.

Osafo and his gang are said to have trailed a banker (name withheld) in 2012 after the banker had closed from work and was returning home.

The banker was attacked in front of his gate by the unknown men, who snatched his vehicle and made away with other valuables.

Policeman shot

Speaking to journalists yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Tetteh Yohuno, described Osafo’s arrest as a major breakthrough for the police and relief for residents of Adentan, Manjor and their environs who had been terrorised for a long time by the suspect and his gang.

He said following the attack on the banker in 2012, the police had a tip-off that the snatched vehicle was being offered for sale by Osafo at Ashaiman.

As part of strategies to arrest the suspect, Mr Yohuno said, plainclothes policemen went to feign interest in the vehicle, but while one of the investigators was negotiating the price with Osafo, one of Osafo’s accomplices noticed that the buyers were policemen.

“Without any provocation, Osafo pulled a pistol from his pubic region and fired at the chest of one of the policemen, Lance Corporal Iddi Briamah,” he said.

The policeman was rushed to the Police Hospital, while the suspects absconded.

Lance Corporal Briamah died a day after the incident while he was still on admission at the Police Hospital.

Luck eludes suspect

Through intelligence, Mr Yohuno said, the police later had a tip-off that suspect School Boy and his accomplices were hiding at Ashiaman.

In the course of their arrest, he said, the suspect and his accomplices opened fire on police operatives, leading to the death of one of the robbers, identified as Katakul

The police, however, managed to arrest one of the accomplices, identified as Godson Mante, 26, while the others, including Osafo, escaped.

Mante was put before an Accra Circuit Court and is still under trial.

Through a tip-off, Mr Yohuno said, the police heard that Osafo was hiding in a rented apartment with his 14-year-old junior high school girlfriend at Adentan.

On July 19, 2015, he said, “luck eluded Osafo, who had earlier escaped through a kiosk when policemen stormed his hideout at Adentan, and he was arrested”.

This is a mistake

When Osafo was paraded at the Accra Regional Police Command yesterday for journalists to take pictures of him for their publications, he challenged the police that his arrest was a mistaken identity.

“This is a mistake. Though my friends call me School Boy, I am not a criminal. I challenge the police and the so-called victims to come and identify me. I am an innocent boy,” he said.
