Alleged wife killer appears in court

A 56-year-old man who allegedly battered his wife to death with a hoe and also injured his seven-year old stepson at Dankyira in the Ga West municipality last Tuesday appeared before the Accra District Court.

Thomas Kofi Owusu has been charged with two counts of murder and causing harm. His appearance in the court formed part of the process to facilitate his eventual trial at a High Court.

Public interest

The incident sparked public interest following the manner in which it played out.

Owusu allegedly killed his wife after a heated argument and inflicted severe injuries on his stepson who witnessed the murder incident. He later walked to the Amasaman  District Police Command to report the incident. 

When he appeared in court On Tuesday, Owusu behaved as though he was not aware of his current predicament or simply not interested in what was happening in the courtroom.

The court, presided over by Mr Worlanyo Kotoku, adjourned the case to November 22, 2016.

Facts

Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Mawunyo Nanegbe, said on October 30, 2016 at about 8:30 p.m., Owusu went to the Amasaman Police Station and reported that “he had killed his wife and stepson and locked them up in a room.’’

He said the police immediately arrested Owusu and made him (Owusu) escort them to his house where his wife was found lying dead in a pool of blood in the living room.

“The stepson was also found lying by his mother in a pool of blood with severe wounds on the head gasping for breath,’’ the police said.

Acording to the prosecutor, Owusu’s stepson was immediately rushed to the Amasaman Government Hospital.He was later transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

Mr Nanegbe said preliminary investigations by the police revealed that Owusu and his wife had a misunderstanding while retiring to bed.

According to him, during the misunderstanding, Owusu hit his wife with a hoe until she fell unconscious.

“He also used the same implement to hit the step-son in the head until he also fell unconscious and started bleeding,’’ the prosecutor said.
