All set for SHS placement
All is set for the placement of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates into senior high schools and technical institutes (TIs).

This follows the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) submission of the raw scores of the candidates to the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat.
The Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, who confirmed the submission of the raw scores to the Junior Graphic, said the council also submitted results of the 321 schools that were withheld as investigations into the matter had been completed.
“Now we do not have any results in our custody, everything has been sent to the CSSPS,” the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, told the Junior Graphic.
She said some of the results of candidates from the 321 schools were cancelled but could not give the details of the cancelled results.
The raw scores are the actual marks obtained by the candidates in the various subjects. The total raw scores of six subjects; four core and two other best subjects, are used to place the candidates in schools according to their choices rather than the grades they had.
A total of 516,867 vacancies have been declared in SHSs and technical institutes for the placement of this year’s BECE candidates.
The vacancies are in 832 public and private SHSs, 151 technical institutes and 41 community day SHSs.
According to the regional breakdown of vacancies, the Ashanti Region has the highest number of 130,512, followed by the Eastern Region with 81,442 and the Greater Accra Region with 53,817 vacancies.
The others are: Volta Region, 56,051; Brong Ahafo, 51,435; Central, 50,931; Western, 35,050; Northern, 27,447; Upper East, 16,435 and Upper West, 13,747 vacancies.
A total of 460,930 candidates, made up of 239,898 males and 221,031 females, sat for the examination this year. The number is 5.25 per cent higher than last year’s.
The candidates were from 14,267 schools and the examination was administered in 1,598 centres.
Out of the number of candidates who registered for the examination, 3,281 (0.7 per cent) were absent.
