Sources in the area said residents could not go about their normal duties, such as going to their farms, as the incident had created fear, panic and tension in the Alavanyo community.

A 15-year-old student of Local Authority Junior High School was shot in the ribs killing him instantly at Alavanyo-Deme in the Hohoe Municipality.

Boy, 15, killed

The victim, identified as Prince Kwakutsey, was said to be eating at home at about 4p.m. when he was attacked by alleged unidentified gunmen.

According to an eyewitness report, the victim was seen earlier in the day running errands for his mother after school before the incident occurred.

One other boy, who saw the alleged gunmen and raised an alarm, was also shot in the left thigh. He is currently receiving treatment at the Margaret Marquart Hospital.

Though it is unclear whether the shooting incident was linked to an age-old land dispute between Alavanyo and Nkonya, the area is said to be manned by joint police and military forces.

The youth leader at Alavanyo, Mr George Cakooka Asare, complained that the police and military base in the community was far from the residents creating security lapses.

“There are about 10 routes to Alavanyo town from Nkonya but we don't have policemen there to check persons who enter the area,” Mr Asare said.

Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent of Police, Mr Wonder Dogbevia, has confirmed the incident but said a team of policemen had been despatched to the area for further investigations.

Similar incident two weeks ago

A similar shooting incident had occurred at Nkonya about three weeks ago resulting in the death of two male adults.

The victims were also shot and killed on their farm in a similar manner.

Some residents believed that the killings could signal the renewal of the age-old land conflict between the people of Alavanyo and Nkonya.

The two communities are still under a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on them by the Ministry of Interior.
