About 10,000 trees are expected to be planted in selected communities and on school compounds to prevent windstorms from causing havoc to buildings, as well as   provide the people with a healthy environment.

The communities to benefit from the exercise are Domoki and Brahabekumi. The basic schools to gain are the Agona Nkran Islamic JHS,the Amanful No. 2 AEDA basic School, the Kofi Kum AEDA School and the Fanti Bawjiase AEDA School.

NADMO coordinator

The Agona East District Coordinator of NADMO, Mr John Kuntu Blankson, told the Daily Graphic  that the afforestation exercise was intended to replace a large section of the forest vegetation that had been lost due to the activities of chainsaw operators.

He said much of the destruction done to buildings in many communities were as a result of trees that had been cut down. He said if more trees were planted, buildings would be protected even when heavy storms occurred.

Mr Blankson said the government spent a lot of money providing relief items to victims of disasters at a time when the money could have been directed into other areas of the economy.

He urged members of the communities where the trees are planted to take good care of them in order that they may achieve the intended purposes.

The District Chief Executive for Agona East, Mr Francis Duodu Addo, said the move formed part of a three year plan put together by the assembly to plant trees across the district.

He called for a stop to indiscriminate cutting down of trees in the area as it was destroying the vegetative cover there.

Mr Addo urged people in the district to go in for Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) as fuel for their domestic use in order to save the forests from further degradation.
