AGA dismisses recruitment rumours

Anglogold Ashanti (AGA), Obuasi Mine, has dismissed rumours that it is recruiting people after a few years of recess.AGA suspended its underground mining operations in September 2014 resulting in a lay-off of a substantial number of its employees.

However, addressing the press regarding the rumour on recruitment at Obuasi, the Vice-President in charge of Sustainability at the Obuasi Mine, Nana Ampofo Bekoe, said he had personally received phone calls from members of the public seeking jobs in the mine.

He said AGA was waiting on investors, and that the company had not conducted any recruitment exercise.

He noted that AGA was a responsible mining company and would as such go through due processes in recruiting personnel when the time was right.

Urge for employable skills

Nana Bekoe urged people within the mine’s operational area, particularly the youth, to first of all acquire skills that would stand them to be hired.

He said without requisite skills, it would be difficult to be employed to work with the AGA.

He called on Nananom, the Clergy and assembly members in the various electoral areas in the mine’s jurisdiction, as well as officers in the community relations office of AGA to organise training programmes on skills required by the mine for the people.

“If AGA will engage in a recruitment exercise, it will consider people in its operational area first, but then prospective recruits should have skill that will fit the scope of work in the mines,” he said.
