Adentan Municipal Assembly supports PWDs

The Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA) has presented tools and equipment valued at GH¢7,655.01 to 22 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality. The amount was the three per cent allocation to the PWDs for the third quarter of the 2016 disbursement of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

Financial independence

The move by the assembly, according to the Municipal  Director of Social Development, Mrs Clara Sowah, was part of the assembly’s attempt to break the barriers of stigmatisation and discrimination against PWDs and to empower them to be financially and economically independent.

She said the beneficiaries were part of an original 99 people who applied for the support and encouraged the PWDs in the municipality to put the equipment to good use, generate income and create employment opportunities in order to support other PWDs.

“I also wish to urge them to join hands with fellow PWDs in the Ghana Federation of Disabled in the Adentan Municipality to produce a common synergy for healthy policy for the best interest of PWDs,” he said.

Commendation

She commended the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Benjamin B. Angenu, and his team for the immense support towards the empowerment of PWDs in the municipality.

Decision to equip PWDs

Presenting the equipment to the beneficiaries, Mr Angenu explained that until recently anytime the allocation came, beneficiaries would apply to pay school fees and medical expenses.

“This time around, we realised that anytime we do that, they come back, so we decided to establish them in business so that they will be able to take care of themselves and their dependents.”

“So with the next disbursement, the same group of people will not be applying again. New ones will apply and we will equip them too until we are able to settle all of them,” he explained.

Area of interest

Asked how the beneficiaries were equipped, the MCE explained that they selected their areas of interest such as polytanks to sell water, sewing machines and containers such as barbering shops, barbering shop kits and bakeries, among other initiatives.

“So, it is something that you have requested,” he explained, adding that it did not matter how much a request of a beneficiary would cost citing, for instance, that some requested polytanks, while others requested deep freezers and barbering kits.

Mr Angenu said the assembly was consistent with the disbursement of the disability quota anytime the quarterly common fund was released and advised the beneficiaries to make use of what was given to them.
