The countries that would be participating in the 36th Congress include Benin, Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Liberia, Niger, Cameroun, Angola, Cad, Gabon, Zambia, Mauritania and Mauritius.

The President of the club, Ms Esther Tandoh, said this during a weed clearing and planting of trees exercise in Accra last Saturday.

The initiative

The initiative, which is aimed at encouraging tree planting and ensure more green vegetation in the country, formed part of the activities lined up to commemorate the anniversary.

As part of the exercise, the club cleared weeds and planted species of trees such as acacia, mahogany, millettia and sapida along the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) bypass, Legon.

This brought together members of the club as well as representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Forestry Commission (FC).

Plant more trees

Speaking during the exercise, an official from the FC, Mr Thomas Gyambrah, underscored the need to plant more trees to replace the ones that were cut down, stressing that deforestation threatened and endangered the habitats of wildlife.

“We rely on our forests for providing abundant supplies of clean water. Our forests clean our air and fight climate change therefore, our forests need your help,” he said.

He said the exercise was a good initiative because the trees would grow to beautify the surroundings and also provide shade for pedestrians who use the pathway

Mr Gyambrah called on corporate bodies to help in replacing trees to conserve and protect the vegetation and animals.

Afforestation

For his part, a representative from the EPA, Mr Fiifi Domson, encouraged Ghanaians to frown at the habit of cutting and selling trees without replacing them, adding that“planting more trees ensures continuity of life”.
