They have been employing the use of hidden cameras at vantage points on roads to arrest especially red light jumpers.

The move, according to the Operations Officer at the Accra Central MTTD, ASP Sulemana Sulley Jnr, would enable the MTTD to arrest and punish motorists who speed off when the traffic lights turns red.

On Monday afternoon, within a period of an hour during which the “Red Light Team” from the Accra Central MTTD sent their operation to the Holy Spirit Cathedral traffic lights at Adabraka, a number of motorists were arrested majority of whom were motorcycle riders.

Among those arrested and looking visibly embarrassed were a driver from the Ghana College of Physicians, a staff of Fidelity Bank who was using the bank’s branded vehicle and the driver of a bullion pick-up.

A motor cycle rider (pictured above) in an attempt to escape arrest knocked down and injured one policeman.

He was subsequently arrested and handcuffed. (Watch a video of the incident below)

The operation by men from the Central MTTD took the offenders by surprise, allowing the offenders to drive right into the waiting hands of the police.

ASP Sulley noted that within the first quarter of 2016, over 500 deaths have occurred through motor accidents, a situation he described as alarming.
