Accra Metropolitan Assembly observes ‘My First Day at School’

The Accra Metropolitan Education Service, together with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), yesterday observed ‘My First Day at School’ as part of the two institutions’ commitment towards making the environment receptive for children who entered school for the first time for the 2016/2017 academic year.

The concept, introduced years ago by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, is meant to encourage new entrants, especially kindergarten and basic school pupils, to accept and enjoy school.

The Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije,  led a delegation to visit schools, including the Richard Akwei Memorial School, Korle Gonno Cluster of Schools,  Salvation Cluster of Schools and the Millennium City School at Salleria, all within the Accra Metropolis.

He was accompanied by the Metro Director of Education, Mr Kwesi Hutchful; the Metro Education Public Relations Officer, Ms Evelyn Kwarko; the Circuit Supervisor, Mrs Letitia Garr; the School Desk Officer,  Mr S.O. Awuku, and the Metro Director of Budget and Rating, who is also the acting Coordinating Director, Mrs Lydia Sackey.

The delegation interacted with the pupils, teachers and some parents at the various schools visited, and also presented some educational items to the children.

Focus on education

In all the schools visited, Dr Vanderpuije took the opportunity to advise the children to focus on education and study hard to become responsible citizens.

He said every great person went through the same process and transition they were undergoing, hence the need to dream big and work towards achieving their dreams.

“All the leaders you see were children like you and have grown up to become responsible people.

So I urge you not to give up but strive hard to achieve your aims,” Dr Vanderpuije said.

He pledged that the AMA would continue to liaise with the Ministry of Education and provide the needed logistics that would support their education.

According to him, he was committed to the education of the children, and further pledged to visit them regularly.

Concept

Explaining the ‘My first day at School’ concept, Mr Hutchful said it was introduced to boost the morale of children as well as encourage children to go to school.

“By and large, the concept is meant to increase students population,” he added.

He urged parents who had not sent their school-age children to school to do so before the first term ends.
