Accra gets tourist information centre

Visitors to this country and the nation’s capital, especially, will no longer be at a loss in terms of where to go or what to do to fill their time here.

That’s because the  Accra Tourist Information Centre (ATIC) which will be a reference point for anything related to tourism in this  country has been opened by Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

The facility  is located near the Flagstaff House. It will serve as a one-stop shop to access reliable  information and services such as booking and ticketing for airlines, tour guiding and currency issues. With plans to establish a restaurant at the centre, the facility is expected to be a place for people to meet all their travel needs.

The single storey building has several office spaces, a performing area for mini events, a library and washrooms. It is also fitted with audiovisual equipment for easy access to information.

At the commissioning ceremony, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Kaoru Yushimura, whose government through its Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) agency contributed  GH¢1.2million towards the project, said they were honoured to be part of such a project.

Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare described the opening of the centre as  historic and momentous as  it opens a new chapter for the tourism sector.

For her, the facility which is a first of its kind in the country, would make an enormous impact on the tourism industry because it will fill a gap in the provision of information to travellers, tourists and others  with the additional benefit of creating awareness and promoting Ghana as a competitive tourist destination.

Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare said the Ministry plans to establish similar centres in the other regions towards boosting tourism.
