5 Women to be honoured

Five distinguished Ghanaian women who have contributed to the empowerment and inspiration of adolescent girls in the country are to be honoured at an event scheduled to take place on October 7 this year.

They are Professor Henrietta Joy Mensa-Bonsu, a lecturer; Mrs Jane Amavi Kwawu, an independent International Gender Consultant, and Mrs Dorcas Coker-Appiah, Executive Director of Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre.

The rest are Ms Eva Lokko, a Satellite Communication Engineer, and Mrs Angela Dwamena Aboagye, an advocate of Women and Gender issues.

The ceremony, dubbed “Girls’ Inspirer Awards” (GIA), is being organised by Insight Foundation Ghana (IFG), to inspire adolescent girls to remain in school to attain their academic goals, and to also make meaningful impact on their families and society at large, to mark this year’s United Nations International Day of the Girl-Child.

The award seeks to celebrate inspirational women achievers who, apart from their professional work, are making a positive impact on the development of women and girls in society. The awards will also create an opportunity for girls to be inspired and mentored by such accomplished women.

The ceremony, to be supported by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the United Nations Information Centre, Accra, the Ghana Book Trust and Obaapa Development Foundation, will be graced by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur.

Celebration

The Executive Director of Insight Foundation, Mrs Christiana Gockel, said the award sought to celebrate the women achievers who, apart from achievement in their profession, were also making a positive impact  on the development of women and girls in society.

She explained that the event would also create an opportunity for girls to be inspired and mentored by such accomplished women.

In a press statement, Mrs Gockel announced that a magazine featuring the childhood life, school, work, family, social and experiences of the distinguished women and the impact they had made on society would be launched at the event, to  serve as a reference material for teenage girls.

She said the success stories of many women had not been duly acknowledged and packaged for society, especially young girls, to emulate. She stressed: "The initiative, therefore, seeks to project and share to the general public and especially young girls, the achievements of these women in the socio-cultural, economic empowerment and political development of the nation."

She said students who participated in the Insight Foundation Ghana Model Girls Essay Writing Competition would also be presented with their prizes.
