4,000 Women undergo breast screening

Breast Care International (BCI), an NGO, has held a free clinical breast screening exercise for over 4,000 women who participated in the Women’s Aglow Ministry’s national convention that was held in Kumasi recently.

The women were also taken through steps to personally examine their breasts for lumps.

The exercise took place at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and was sponsored by Roche Ghana.

The President of BCI, Dr Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai, described the event as highly encouraging,  saying it is “the most highly patronised screening programme BCI has undertaken this year”.

She promised to make the breast screening exercise a regular feature in future national conventions of the Women’s Aglow International.

Detection

Dr Mrs Addai indicated that “Early detection of the disease and prompt action is equal to prevention”.

After the pre-screening education period, during which questions were asked on the signs and symptoms of the disease, the president and her team also demonstrated ways of conducting self-breast examination.

This was followed by ‘Survivors Corner’ where a survivor of the breast cancer disease shared her personal experiences, after which the participants were screened.

Advice

Those with problems were counselled and advised to attend hospital for further investigations and treatment.

The President of Women’s Aglow, Dr Mrs Dorothy Danso, said the invitation extended to BCI was in recognition of the level of commitment displayed over the years by the NGO in educating and screening women for breast cancer.

She entreated women to regularly practise self-breast examination as directed and also urged them to consider their health as a priority.
