The deceased are Ms Imaya Kasim, 31, wife of the officer, and his seven-month-old daughter, Hilal Akumpigida.

In another incident, a six-year old child, Akua Fabea, also died in a fire outbreak at Asuoso, a farming settlement, near Nkoranza on Tuesday.

Incidents

The Nkoranza Municipal Commander of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Joseph Owusu, told the Daily Graphic that Ms Kasim was cooking on a gas stove in a makeshift kitchen close to the bedroom where she had left her sleeping daughter. She was said to have left to the market without attending to the gas stove.

According to the police, Ms Kasim returned from the market only to find her kitchen and bedroom in flames.

When she rushed into the bedroom to rescue her daughter, both of them got trapped in the blaze.

All efforts to rescue them proved futile. Mr Akumpigida was out of town when the incident happened.

The charred bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital at Nkoranza for autopsy.

Investigations

The police are also conducting investigations into the fire outbreak at Asuoso, near Nkoranza, which resulted in the death of six-year-old Akua.

The incident occurred in a two-bedroom house at about 8.00 a.m., when the parents of the deceased had left the house.

At the time of going to press, the police and officials of the GNFS were conducting further investigations to ascertain the causes of the two incidents.
