15 Ashanti communities thrown into darkness following destruction of electricity pylons

More than 15 communities in the Konongo and Agogo areas in the Ashanti Region have been thrown into darkness after illegal chainsaw operators felled trees which damaged 11 kilovolt pylons that transmit electricity to those communities.

Since the incident occurred last Saturday, engineers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been working to restore power to the affected areas.

Some of the affected communities are Bimman, Kyekyebiase, Gunmansa, Dome, Akutuase, Hyediem, Agogo and its surrounding communities.

Brief

The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Manager of the ECG, Mr Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, said some illegal chainsaw operators felled huge trees around the pylons around Konongo Kyekyebiase which fell on the cables, resulting in the destruction of the three pylons and leading to a blackout in the affected communities.

He said the police in Konongo had picked up three suspects for interrogation as investigations had commenced into the incident.

Strike

In another development, workers of the ECG in the region continued with their sit-down strike to ensure that the government does not carry through with its intention of placing the ECG on partial privatisation for the next 25 years.

The workers at the company’s regional office at the Kumasi Airport Roundabout did not attend to customers, even though the workers could be seen working in their offices.

At the Adum, Ridge and Danyame offices, customers continued to bear the brunt of the daily eight-hour sit-down strike.
