You will make history as first Free SHS students – Nana Addo tells students

In September, this year you will make history as the first students to enter the country’s senior high schools under the Free Senior High School Policy of the government, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told prospective students.

He said owing to his vision and proclamation of free SHS education policy, he had received several unfavorable comments.

“Some of the comments are that I cannot do it, it’s not feasible, it’s a deceit, it will not come on. I want to tell you now and here that it will come on this academic year,” the president who is currently on a six-day tour of the Western and Central regions, said while addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of Bibiani in the Western Region.

He said as a president he is reminding them that, September is only next month when “the first students in the history of our country are going to benefit from the free senior high school system.”

In appointing ministers, he said the Minister of Education was carefully chosen to ensure that the dream of actualizing the free SHS in the next academic year is achieved.

The President said the sector minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has everything covered to ensure a smooth take off come September, where government would fund the cost of public senior high schools (SHS) from the 2017/2018 academic year onwards.

Some cost items to be absorbed by the state under the free SHS policy include admission fees, library fees, science centre fees, computer lab fees, examinations and utility fees.
