World Vision donates to schools in Northern Region

The World Vision Ghana, a Christian humanitarian organisation, has presented teaching and learning materials to four districts in the Northern Region for onward distribution to needy schools in the districts.

Among the items are over 3,800 pairs of shoes, jackets and sanitary pads, as well large quantities of assorted medical supplies to help improve the quality of life of the children and their families in the various communities.

The medical items were bed pans, sheets, anaesthetic accessories, syringes, bleach, gauze, cover gowns and stethoscopes all valued at about GH¢697,000.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiary districts are Tolon, West Gonja, Zabzugu and the Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Assembly.

According to Madam Benedicta Pealore, who made the presentation on behalf of the national director of World Vision, the interventions were meant to ensure that children did not only enjoy good health but were also educated to lead a healthy life.

She indicated that World Vision International was dedicated to working to promote the interest of children, families and communities to realise their full potential by addressing the root causes of poverty that was militating against their development.

Madam Pealore announced that the organisation began operations in the country in 1979 and had been pursuing integrated community development support in water, hygiene and sanitation, health, education, food security and economic empowerment to alleviate the plight of the poor.

“Our presence in the 10 regions of Ghana has enabled us to contribute to the well-being of 6.4 million children and their families. We also focus on the basic needs of children to help transform their lives for the better,” she added.

Cost

She disclosed that, last year, the organisation expended an amount of about US$16.5 million on its humanitarian programme for various institutions, including the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Health Service. This year, the amount was increased to about US$2.2 million.

The Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Alhassan Abdulai Red, who received the items on behalf of the beneficiary institutions, expressed appreciation to their benefactor and promised to put them to judicious use for the benefit of the children.

According to him, some districts in the region continued to record poor performance of pupils and students in their final examination results, leading to falling standards of education in the area, and hoped that the donation of the items, coupled with the efforts of other stakeholders, would help improve their performance.
