The facility includes classrooms, laboratories, administration blocks, dormitories and a clinic.

The Executive Chairman of ICODEHS, Sheikh Mustapha Ibrahim, told the Daily Graphic that his outfit was currently working on the accreditation for the nursing training college from the National Accreditation Board.

Plans are also far advanced for the affiliation of the college with the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

He said ICODEHS would engage qualified lecturers and make use of modern equipment in the training of nurses.

The college will offer a three-year diploma course in nursing.

Sheikh Mustapha said the long-term goal of ICODEHS was to establish a medical school for the training of doctors and allied health professionals.

He said the council wanted to complement the government’s effort at training medical officers to support the delivery of quality health care in the country.

Other school projects

Sheikh Mustapha said ICODEHS had drawn up a plan to construct teacher training colleges in some regions in the country.

He said the idea was to turn out more teachers to provide quality teaching at the basic level.

The council is also ready to start the construction of a university at Tuba in Accra.

The ICODEHS Executive Chairman said the council had put up 14 basic schools  and indicated that plans were far advanced for the construction of  an additional 10 basic schools by the end of the year.

He said the focus would be in the rural areas of the Northern, Upper West, Upper East and Brong Ahafo regions.

The council currently has  two senior high schools — one in Tamale in the Northern Region and the other one in Accra.

The council has constructed 70 mosques in the last two months in the Northern, Upper West and Upper East regions, and intends to put up  additional 40  before the year ends.

The number of wells constructed by the council this year stands at 200, and it plans to add more than 150 by the close of the year.

External projects

ICODEHS has extended its projects to other African countries, including Togo, Benin, Senegal, Liberia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Mauritania and The Gambia.

The projects executed in those countries are schools, mosques and wells.

Sheikh Mustapha is the recipient of the Star of the Volta, which was given to him by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and another national award given to him by President John Evans Atta Mills.
