Work on Gomoa Gyaman SHS begins

Gomoa Gyaman in the Gomoa East District in the Central Region is among the first 50 districts to benefit from the government’s programme to construct 200 community senior high schools (SHSs) across the country by 2016.

A ceremony was performed recently by the District Chief Executive, Mr Isaac Kingsley Ahunu-Armah, Mrs Rachel Florence Appoh Opoku, the Member of Parliament MP for the Gomoa Central Constituency, together with the Chief of the town, Nana Ama Essoun II, at Gomoa Gyaman, to hand over the site for the construction of a community day senior high school to the contractor (for the commencement of work).

Durbar of chiefs and people

At a well-attended durbar of chiefs and people of the area, Mr Ahunu-Armah said education was one of the government’s priority areas, since it served as the bedrock of the survival of every society.

He noted that what they were witnessing was in fulfilment of the government’s resolve to construct more SHSs across the country to increase access to education at the second cycle level.

He indicated that the district had only one SHS which was affecting access to secondary education in the area, and expressed the hope that when the new school was completed, a lot more students would have access to education.

He urged the contractor to execute the project professionally and complete it ahead of schedule.

Member of Parliament

Mrs Appoh Opoku lauded the chiefs and people of the area for allocating 17.25 acre land to the government to enable the project to take off.

She urged the pupils to study hard so that upon the completion of the project, they would benefit from it.

Director of Education

The Gomoa East District Director of Education, Mrs Grace Adzo Obodai, lamented that only 10 per cent of students who completed JHS continued to the senior high level, citing a limited number of SHSs in the district as a contributory factor.

Nana Ama Essuon commended the government for the project and assured the contractor and the government of her people’s support for the completion of the project.
