The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) says it will not tolerate any attempt by government to freeze wages and salaries in 2014.

Government served notice last year that it may freeze salaries of public sector workers at current levels throughout 2014, provided organised labour gives its consent.

In a communique signed by the national president, Mr Paul Agyei Boakye, after its 4th Quadrennial (51st) National Delegates Conference in Accra, participants called on government, as a matter of urgency, to restore the allowance paid to teacher trainees since the withdrawal will negatively affect their effective preparation as teachers.

GNAT also called on the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to pay outstanding 2013 salary increase arrears and 2011/2012 incremental credit arrears due employees at the Ghana Education Service by end of March 2014.

It further called on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to expedite the implementation of categories two and three allowances that have been “overly delayed.”

Other issues raised by the Conference included the irregular and inadequate supply of logistics to schools, thus affecting teaching and learning over the years.

“The seeming rationalization exercise coupled with the erratic transfers in the GES is affecting effective teaching and learning in the 1st and 2nd Cycle Schools. Conference therefore calls on GES Management to properly plan and handle these exercises in a more humane manner,” the Conference resolve.

In consonance with the six months exclusive breast-feeding programme, GNAT is urging Government to consider extending the duration of maternity leave.
