WAEC re-opens 2016 Nov-Dec registration for candidates with poor results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has re-opened registration for this year’s November-December (Nov-Dec) West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.

This means that candidates who did not do well in the May-June WASSCE can register for the examination to better their grades.

The re-opening of registration, which lasts for 11 days, started on Monday, August 15, and will end on Friday, August 26, 2016.

According to the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, the decision is in response to the numerous requests from the public to have candidates improve their grades.

She said prospective candidates should report personally to the WAEC Offices in the regions where they intend to write the examination and added that candidates registering during this period would be allocated examination centres in the regional capitals only.

Out of the 274,262 candidates who took this year’s WASSCE, 1,576 had their subject results cancelled, while 598 had their entire results cancelled, with 13 candidates having their entire results cancelled and barred from taking any of the council’s examinations for two years, mainly for impersonation during the examination.

When the results of this year’s WASSCE were released, WAEC gave a breakdown of the performance of candidates in the four core subjects of English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies as follows:

In English Language, 125,065 (53.19 per cent) obtained Al-C6; 59,725 (25.40 per cent) obtained D7-E8, while 46,595 (19.82 per cent) had F9.

In Mathematics, 77,108 (32.83 per cent) obtained Al-C6; 65,007 (27.68 per cent) obtained D7-E8, while  89,477 (38.10 per cent) had F9.

In Integrated Science, 113,933 (48.48 per cent) obtained Al-C6; 75,938 (32.32 per cent) obtained  D7-E8, with 42,519 (18.09 per cent) getting F9, while in Social Studies, 129,058 (54.93 per cent) obtained Al-C6; 53,824 (22.91 per cent) obtained D7-E8, while 49,198 (20.94 per cent) had F9.

The council said the general performance for 2016 was an improvement over that of 2015.
