The scholarship will cover all expenditure in school: boarding fees, books, academic user fees and hostel fees.

The beneficiaries are brilliant, needy students drawn from the VRA’s host communities and those who are affected by the company’s operations.

At a grand event held at Akosombo last Friday, certificates were presented to the beneficiaries, who were made up of 46 senior high school (SHS) students and 15 others in public tertiary institutions.

It was on the theme: “Creating Opportunities and Partnership through VRA Scholarships for the Next Generation.”

The event brought together traditional rulers, the parents of the awardees and officials from the VRA, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Invest in knowledge

In a speech read on his behalf the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of tertiary, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said current global competitiveness called for investment in knowledge acquisition.

“I am aware that VRA, despite its financial challenges, has embarked on various projects aimed at empowering communities to take action for development. The VRA has touched many lives with its scholarship for SHS and tertiary students and support in the rehabilitation of school infrastructure. This is a commendable effort,” he added.

Mr Ablakwa observed that it was important for partners and corporate institutions to roll out more initiatives to support deprived communities, since that was the best way to empower the people to take active part in decision-making.

Collaborations

For his part, the Chief Executive of VRA, Ing Isaac Kirk Koffi, said the company had rolled out guidance and counselling service to mentor and guide the career development of the beneficiaries.

He said it was through the award of scholarships to needy students that the country could build a rich pool of human resource to sustain its development.

Ing. Koffi observed that it took the collaboration of the private sector and the government to build a robust education sector, saying the interventions by government was not adequate to satisfy the needs of the population.

He urged the beneficiaries to study hard, since that was the means through which they could realise their dreams.
