The beneficiary institutions included the Akropong School for the Blind, the Akropong School for the Deaf, both at Akropong in the Eastern Region; Cape Coast Special Needs School, Children of Hope Orphanage both in Cape Coast in the Central Region and the Accra High School in Accra.

The American students raised their own funds to buy three braillers for donation to the Akropong School for the Blind.

They were also scheduled to make a donation from their personal contributions to the Otumfuo Charity Fund at Manhyia Palace and visit the Kumasi Children’s Home both in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

During their visit, they interacted with teachers, pupils and students of the beneficiary institutions to learn more about their system of education, as well as share experiences with their hosts.

As part of the education and learning tour, the American students attended lectures at the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on various topics.

Led by a professor at the Northeastern University, Dr Vanessa Johnson, the one-month mission of the students in Ghana is to experience the culture and education system in the country and also do a comparative analysis of education in Ghana and the USA.

Experiences

Hannah Kilfoye, a graduate student, said she had learnt a lot about the education system in Ghana, particularly the funding of education which she described as “a big issue”.
