Use knowledge to transform country —Baffour

The Vice-President of the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), Dr Robert Awuah Baffour, has reiterated the need for graduates to use the knowledge they acquired in school to transform the country.

According to him, major economies around the world had been transformed significantly and become richer in the last 20 years largely due to both formal and informal education.

Citing countries like Singapore, China and India, he said they had flourished due to education, adding that sub-Saharan Africa had rather experienced the contrary due to lack of education.

Dr Baffour was speaking at the 15th matriculation ceremony of the GTUC on Saturday at its Tesano Campus in Accra.

“It is expected that you will take advantage of this opportunity to access tertiary education and use it to build your capacity and serve as agents of change in your respective communities,” he advised the matriculants as they took their matriculation oath.

In all, 722 students are reading diploma and degree programmes in Engineering, Informatics and Business Information Technology (IT).

Future of the African Continent

For Dr Baffour, the future of the African Continent largely depends on the willingness of its citizens to harness the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) to promote its development.

“This is the key that can open the doors of the new global economy and its benefits to us. A nation unable to harness the power of ICT and join this economic order is effectively locked out of the new global economy, and forced to remain a marginal player on the world economic stage,” he said.

Agents of change

“How can the knowledge you will be acquiring here at GTUC help change the face of poverty and despair to income and hope?” he asked, and charged the students to make good use of what they would learn to impact the lives of people.

He gave an assurance that the school would give them the best training in ICT and other programmes to enable them to realise their objectives.

He also advised the international students to feel at home though they had come from different countries and cultures.
