‘Use knowledge to support development’

The Rector of Accra Polytechnic (A-Poly), Professor Sylvester Achio, has re-echoed the need for students to use the knowledge they have acquired in school to help transform the country’s economy.

According to him, major economies around the world had been transformed significantly and become richer due to the positive impact of both formal and informal education.

Polytechnic education

He said the concept of polytechnic education was a means of promoting industrialisation in the country and not just educating students.

Citing countries such as China and Japan, he said they had flourished due to education, adding that it had made both countries become global economic giants.

Prof. Achio was speaking at the matriculation ceremony of Accra Polytechnic in Accra last Saturday.

“Begin your dreams of what you want to become and work towards them diligently,” he advised the matriculants as they took their matriculation oath.

In all, 3,836 full and part-time students were matriculated to read programmes in Engineering, Applied Science and Arts and Business and Management Studies.

Future of the country

Prof. Achio said education was vital for the growth of a country and explained that the future of the country largely depended on the willingness of its citizens to harness the new Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) to promote development in the country.

“The advent of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) makes it possible for you to find out how even the most complex technologies came to be and also verify what even your lecturers tell you,” he said.

He, therefore, advised students to make use of ICT which was also a key to transform a country.

Prof. Achio said the decision to convert polytechnics into universities was laudable, indicating that the Accra Polytechnic “wants to be first or among the first to start this concept.”
