While those at the tertiary level received GH¢1,000 for a semester, boarders at the senior high schools were given GH¢800, and day students received GH¢600 each.

Apart from Adeiso, the district capital, the district, which was carved out of the hitherto vast West Akyem Municipality, is composed of small communities and hamlets and most of the people are farmers who cultivate food crops and cocoa on small holdings, making it difficult for them to educate their children beyond the basic level.

Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries at Adeiso at the weekend, the District Chief Executive, Mr Derrick Ohene Assifu-Bekoe, told the gathering, comprising mostly parents and the students, that the assembly took the decision in line with its mission of improving the lot of the youth to climb the academic ladder.

He advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity and come out as professionals to render services to their respective communities.

Mr Assifu-Bekoe, who elaborated on numerous social amenities being provided by the assembly, as well as poverty alleviation initiatives, was hopeful that the area would, in the near future, be transformed into one of the best in the region.

Mr T.T. Okletey, a representative of the District Directorate of Education, advised parents to invest in the education of their children so that they would take up responsible positions in the future.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Afatsao Medrack Yao-Kuma, a Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Ghana, Legon, on behalf of his colleagues, expressed appreciation to the assembly for its support and said it would make it possible for them to achieve their dreams.
