Consolation

Consolation prizes were given to Volta Barracks School, Ho; Palmer International School, Kumasi and the Elsie Lund School, Tamale. They made it to the semifinal stage and were adjudged fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

The spelling final, which was held during the annual Junior Graphic Fun Fair and the 15th anniversary celebrations of the Junior Graphic, was attended by a number of personalities including the Minister of Gender and Social Welfare, Nana Oye Lithur, and Professor Esi Sutherland Addy from the University of Ghana, and witnessed by large number of students.

Innolink essay

At the event, prizes were also presented to the winners of the Junior Graphic Innolink Young African Writers Contest. About 1,000 entries were received for the contest. Out of the number, 20 were declared winners.

In her address, Nana Oye Lithur commended the Junior Graphic for organising the funfair and the spelling competition.

“The child must be free to explore and to learn. It is for this reason I commend the Junior Graphic and the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) for this funfair,” she said.

The Editor of the Junior Graphic, Mrs Mavis Kitcher, said among other things that the fan clubs were set up to encourage their members to read the paper, story books and write articles for publication.

“That is why through our 15 years history, many pages of the Junior Graphic continue to be written by children, so I implore every child in basic and secondary school to ensure that their works are published in the paper before they undertake tertiary education,” she added.

For her part, Prof. Sutherland Addy urged parents to endeavour to, once in a while, take their children to other parts of the country for them to know and learn the way of life of other people.

That, she said, was to enable them to appreciate life better rather than staying at one place all their lives.

The Manager of  the McCarthy Hill branch of Ecobank, Mr Mark Adjei, said healthy competition among children was important for their upbringing.

That, he said, was why the bank partnered the Junior Graphic to organise the spelling competition.

The event was sponsored by Ecobank Ghana Limited, MoneyGram, Ghana Book Trust, Voltic Mineral Water, Magic Malt, Ghana Book Publishers Association, Peak Milk and Papaye.
