University of Ghana admits 18,106 fresh students

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, has advised students to strive for excellence by eschewing all forms of vices that will inhibit their studies.

“You cannot strive for excellence if you are not disciplined. Guard against anti-social activities such as occultism and the peddling and use of narcotic drugs and study diligently and you will be on the way towards excellence,” he said.

Admissions

He was speaking at this year’s matriculation ceremony of the university held on Saturday.

This year, the university received 35,630 applications, made up 28,665 undergraduate and 6,965 graduate applications.

Out of that number, it offered admission to 18,106 applicants, made up of 14,737 undergraduates and 3,369 graduate students.

The Vice-Chancellor attributed the decision of the university to turn down the applications of many qualified applicants to its limited facilities and human resource.

Students aid

He said the university had, in 2014, received GH¢640,000 from both local and foreign donors towards its financial aid scheme for students.

The scheme, which was instituted in 2005, aims at providing financial assistance for qualified students who, without such assistance, may not be able to meet their education expenses.

He stated that 120 students were sponsored each year through the scheme in the form of full or partial scholarship in order for them not to have their education at the university interrupted or terminated.

Shuttle service

In a related development, the university has launched a new shuttle service to ease transportation problems on its campus.

The service, which is run with 10 buses, will be operated by the Road Safety and Transport Consultancy (RSTC) Limited and will ply the major routes on the campus.

Prof. Aryeetey, who launched the service, said it was a timely intervention because of the difficulties some students and staff of the university experienced with transportation on the university campus.
