University of Energy holds second matriculation

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani has held the second matriculation for newly-admitted students.
The UENR, which is a public-funded national institution, was established by an Act of Parliament, Act 830 in December 2011.

Out of the 909 applications received, the university could admit 560 students, representing 61 per cent. Those admitted included 80 females, representing only 14 per cent.

Addressing the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. (Mrs) Esi Awuah, explained that the university’s academic programmes were specifically tailored to meet its goals of  producing highly developed manpower to solve the critical energy and natural resource needs of the country.

She said ‘‘by the training being offered in this university, we expect our students to be practical-oriented, innovative and analytical to acquire entrepreneurial skills.’’

According to Prof Awuah, the university could certainly have admitted more students, considering the spacious lecture theatres and laboratories.

She said statistics show approximately 28 per cent increase in enrolment over the last year figure of 154, adding that ‘‘we consider this as a significant jump for a university which is barely two years old.’’

She indicated that in the first year, the university introduced only three programmes, namely, B.Sc Energy Engineering, B.Sc Natural Resource Management and B.Sc. Wildlife and Range Management.

However, this academic year, five more programmes had been added, namely B.Sc Electrical and Electronic Engineering, B.Sc Mechanical Engineering, B.Sc Environmental Engineering, B.Sc Mathematics and B.Sc Computer Science.
