The Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, who inaugurated the council, said while distance learning was imperative for providing support for the successful implementation of the nation’s educational reforms, it was proper to ensure that teachers on the programme did not miss out on contact hours with their pupils.

Prof. Agyeman commended UCC for training teachers for the educational sector.

She said while staying focused on its primary mandate of training teachers, it was necessary that its products were trained with a high level of creativity, tolerance and respect for diversity to enable them to turn challenges into opportunities in the fast-changing job market.

She said government was confident of the calibre of the board members, adding that it was expected that the governing council would use its expertise, knowledge and experience to make decisions that would bring about innovation.

The Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr Samuel Brew Butler, pledged on behalf of the members to work with selflessness, integrity, objectivity and accountability to propel the university to greater heights.

He said the council would work to help the UCC collaborate with business organisations and create linkages between the university and industry while ensuring amicable and lasting solution to the problem of encroachment on it’s lands.
