Universal Merchant Bank gives scholarship to 2014 WAEC Overall Best candidate

The timely intervention of Universal Merchant Bank has put the dream of the 2014 West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) Overall Best candidate, 17-year-old Master Mickail Hasan, back on track to become a petroleum engineer.

The bank on Thursday presented a full scholarship to Master Hasan for emerging the overall best in the WAEC Distinction Award at the May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) award ceremony in Accra. The scholarship covers tuition, feeding, accommodation and stipend until he completes the course.

Even though Master Hasan topped in the WAEC Distinction Award and the WAEC International Excellence Award for 2014, he is still in the house because his parents, who are financially challenged, are unable to sponsor his university education.

While his mates are in Level 100 in their respective tertiary institutions, Master Hasan keeps himself busy as a classroom teacher in a private school.

A former student of Ghana Secondary Technical in Takoradi, Master Hasan scored eight Grade A1s in the General Science programme to win the prestigious award of the cedi equivalent of $1000, a certificate and citation. In addition, Hasan also emerged as the best candidate in the General Science programme and received the cedi equivalent of $400.

For winning the overall best award and the best candidate in the General Science, his former senior high school, the Ghana Secondary Technical School, received two plaques for the two awards.

Scholarship

It was an emotional moment as the Director of Corporate Banking of Universal Merchant Bank, Mr Kwame Poku, presented a dummy cheque for the full scholarship to Master Hasan.

In addition, the bank presented a laptop each to the three best candidates in the exams.

Master Hasan, later in a word of appreciation, thanked WAEC for the exposure and Universal Merchant Bank for granting him the scholarship to ensure that he pursue his educational ambition of becoming a petroleum engineer.

In a brief statement after the presentation, Mr Poku said the bank was pleased to be associated with success and explained that the bank was committed to supporting excellence in education.

He said the impressive performance of the candidates was an accomplishment worthy of acknowledgement.

Mr Poku described the presentation as the beginning of many more things to come and expressed gratitude to WAEC for giving the bank the opportunity to partner it in rewarding excellence.
