UMat, Ashesi University sign MoU

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Tarkwa in the Western Region and the Ashesi University College in the Greater Accra Region have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), under which UMaT will support the latter to run degree programmes in Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering as well as Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

A six-member team from Ashesi, led by its President, Professor Patrick Awuah, visited UMaT, where the host Vice Chancellor, Professor Jerry S.Y. Kuma, and his counterpart signed the agreement documents.

Value for money

In a brief remark, Prof. Kuma indicated that the choice of UMaT to support Ashesi was not by accident, giving the assurance that UMaT would give its counterpart the best of assistance.

He said the university possessed best student-teacher ratio and best laboratories, and, therefore, would contribute to the training of students with in-depth practical knowledge that would enable them to solve problems by using their hands.

Feedback

The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that feedbacks from industries and other establishments where UMaT students had been engaged showed that they were satisfied with their performances.

Educational philosophy

For his part, Prof. Awuah noted that the quality of programmes run by UMaT was impressive and his institution stood the chance to benefit from the agreement, saying that the educational philosophy of Ashesi was to build a broad-based student leadership.

He observed that UMaT had the reputation of being a practical institution and they had no other option than to fall on the institution for support when the board of Ashesi directed the authorities to look for an institution to affiliate with, in 2012.
