UK student leader for NUGS congress

The President of the National Union of Students (NUS) in the United Kingdom, Ms Toni Pearce, will address the 47th congress of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) slated for August 23 to August 26 at the Central University College, Prampram.

The UK student leader  is also expected to officially launch the Ghana Students Discount Card, a system which allows students in polytechnics, colleges and universities to enjoy discounts on items like food, travel, school fees and leisure activities around the country.

Additionally, Ms Pearce will facilitate a workshop during the congress, which is expected to be attended by more than 800 students  from across the country.

This year’s congress has the theme: “National Union of Ghana Students: A reliable partner to national development.”

Some past executive officers of NUGS are also expected to narrate their experiences during a networking session with the delegates.

The annual congress gives opportunities to students and their leaders to debate major issues, hear from speakers and experts in fringe meetings and elect new leaders to carry the leadership mantle.

In an interview, the NUGS General Secretary, Ms Louisa Atta-Agyemang, admitted that this would be the first time a sitting NUGS-UK President would participate in a NUGS congress.

She indicated that the Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang; the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Julius Debrah and the President of the Central University College, Kwesi Yankah, are among dignitaries expected to grace the opening session of the congress.
