UG to introduce sustainability and environmental sanitation MA programmes

The University of Ghana, Legon has planned to introduce two new programmes in Sustainability Sciences and Environmental Sanitation at the masters’ level.

The Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences of the university, Prof Daniel Asiedu, who made this known said the programmes were expected to start next academic year.

Speaking at opening of a two-day international conference on sustainability and environmental management in Accra, Prof Asiedu said a 10-year strategic plan to complement national efforts at mitigating the impact of climate change in Ghana has also been initiated.

As part of the plan, the university has adopted a nationwide tree planting project dubbed "green university”, with focus on the University of Ghana campuses.

To help consolidate the initiative, some educational programmes and courses have been introduced by the Institute for Environmental and Sanitation Studies (IESS) of the university to educate some Ghanaians towards achieving this goal.

Prof Asiedu said the initiative was to support national efforts to adapt to climate change.

The conference was organised by the IESS in collaboration with Oldenburg University in Germany.

Prof Asiedu said the aim of the conference was to bring researchers and industry players together to discuss topical issues, share ideas and research findings on key aspects of sustainability and environmental management.

"In line with its Strategic Plan from 2014-2024, the University of Ghana has set the goal of helping to evolve and shape innovative solutions and become an example of environmental best practices,” he added.

According to him, the policy was directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, which enjoined all United Nation’s member-countries to protect their environment for the good of their citizens.

He also gave a hint of the introduction of two new programmes, Sustainability Sciences and Environmental Sanitation, which would both be masters’ programmes expected to start from next academic year.
