The SIM cards would enable students in various parts of the country to make free calls among themselves and lecturers at all times.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, who made this known at the matriculation of first-year students last Tuesday, said the university had also converted all modules into electronic books and interactive online learning platform.

The ceremony was held for 2,231 students in the southern sector.

The initiative, aimed at promoting distance education in the country, would also allow students to access online tutorials at all of the university’s 24 study centres.

Prof. Ameyaw-Asabere indicated that technology had changed the face of education; adding that the university, by its distance education mode, sought, to further enhance prospects of admitting more students.

He said the Centre for Distance Education was also introducing new programmes to provide avenues for higher learning for all teachers.

He noted that the deteriorating educational standards required a new crop of transformational teachers to build up the nation’s development and said UEW was committed to its mandate of developing quality teachers for the country.

The students took the matriculation oath, pledging to abide by the rules of the university.

Some of them implored the authorities to ensure that the devices that had been promised were received on time.
