UEW organises seminar to discuss educational issues

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has held a day’s seminar for over 200 participants who are key players in the education sector to discuss issues of relevance to the educational sector in the country.

The seminar, on the theme: “Current trends in teacher education in Ghana”, was the first of a series of workshops to be held at the university to inform stakeholders of results of relevant researches conducted periodically by the UEW on topical educational issues in Ghana.

The Director of the Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS), Prof. Jophus Anamuah-Mensah, said to ensure the smooth transformation of the colleges of education into tertiary status, the UEW, with support from T-TEL Project Fund, had put in place appropriate programmes such as development of resources for continuous tutor professional development.

It also included weekly conduct of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in each college, Teaching and Learning Advisor (TLA) to support  tutors and taking other academic staff through training, coaching and guidance on the use of trainee-centred materials in English, Mathematics and Science.

It again included College Improvement Advisor (CIA) support  for leadership and councils to develop and implement the College Improvement Plans (CIP) and School Partnership Advisor (SPA) works with the colleges of education and partner schools to support trainees and mentors during teaching practice.

Three key topics

Professor Anamuah-Mensah led discussions on three key topics at the workshop, namely Transformation of the Colleges of Education in Ghana – the Road map, Teacher Professional Standards in Ghana and  National Action Plan for Education: 2016 – 2030, while Dr Evelyn Oduro of the GES led discussions on Pre-Tertiary Teacher Professional Development and Management.

Touching on the theme, Prof. Anamuah-Mensah said in spite of the numerous educational policies developed in the past years for the nation, there was still a disconnect between research carried out in the education sector and what the sector ministry did, hence the need for the connection to be made.

Highlighting further  the challenges militating against efforts to upgrade the colleges, he mentioned the lack of clarity on the status of the colleges of education,  the failure to agree on a new salary scale and government’s failure to invest in the upgrade of the colleges of education.

PTPDM Policy

Speaking on the Pre-Tertiary Teacher Professional Development and Management (PTPDM) policy, the Director of Teacher Education Division of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Oduro said the policy was intended to provide the principles and standards for effective preparation of all pre-tertiary teachers in response to the changing needs of education in Ghana, noting that the policy framework was expected to guide all teacher education activities in Ghana.

She indicated that the Teacher Professional Development and Management Policy framework envisaged the training of  teachers committed to their own professional growth and development.

Vice Chancellor

Addressing the seminar earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the UEW, Professor Mawutor Avoke, described the seminar as timely as the university was engaged in affiliating with colleges of education in the country. He added that it was important the forum had been organised to discuss issues of concern pertaining not only to the UEW as an institution but the entire nation.

He thanked IERIS and organisers of the programme for their efforts.
