The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, who made this known said the development was in respect of the increasing demand of employers for employee versatility.

He was addressing the sixth session of the 50th Congregation of the University for the School of Graduate Studies last Saturday.

Commitment

Prof. Ampiah said the Graduate School was further committed to intensifying its mentoring role of affiliate institutions through regular working visits to those institutions in order to enhance standardisation and more learner-friendly delivery of graduate education.

He said in order to open new gateways for knowledge, research and academic exchange, the university had established relationships with a total of 20 local and international institutions.

“We believe these gateways will create many opportunities for students, faculty and staff members by providing new avenues for both local and international engagements,” he said.

The vice chancellor said graduate studies featured prominently in the Corporate Strategic Plan of the UCC, adding that the school and colleges had been at the forefront of promoting active and reflective teaching and learning, research and outreach that strongly positioned the UCC as a centre of excellence.

Programmes

Prof. Ampiah said the School of Graduate Studies and Colleges had also developed new and relevant graduate programmes, revised periodically existing ones and pursued vigorously its regular, sandwich and distance modes of graduate education delivery.

He stated that the school had adhered strictly to consideration of graduate programmes, ensuring effective supervision of graduate research and recommendation of successful graduate students for the award of appropriate degrees and post diploma certificates.

Exhortation

Prof. Ampiah appealed to the graduates to remember to be good ambassadors of the UCC, wherever they found themselves, stressing: “Let your work attitude and general posture be positive.”

In an address, the Chancellor of the university, Sir Dr Sam Jonah, said the graduate education had been recognised as an integral part of university business worldwide, playing a strategic role in promoting education by ensuring academic excellence at the local, national and international levels.

He said graduate education made a difference in the history and growth of higher educational institutions and careers of those who pursued graduate studies, stressing that: “The goal of graduate studies is to expose students to the methods and standards of research needed to work professionally at the frontiers of knowledge.

“Pursuing a graduate degree programme is an important education and career decision; not only will it prepare you towards becoming an expert in your field, it also improves your career prospects,” Sir Jonah said.
